Hiccup is a lovely young golden retriever from our friends over at Waterfront Golden Retrievers, and she was hand selected to be raised for our started dog program. We had the pleasure of training both of Hiccup’s parents before they started their show careers, and both are wonderful examples of the breed. Golden retrievers should be very social, stable in all environments, and eager to please, and Phil and Chantix definitely passed those traits onto this little girl.
Hiccup was born on November 26th, 2025, and started her professional training at 10 weeks of age. She has had a well rounded education in both obedience and manners, and has been very well socialized. Manners training approaches behavior in the house and out in public, and is about teaching dogs to make good decisions on their own without us having to ask. Things included in this are polite greetings without jumping, not mouthing or chewing on inappropriate items, potty training, and not barking. Hiccup also is great when out in public, and she is wonderful traveling in the car. Golden retrievers can be prone to car sickness, but that is not an issue with this little girl.
Obedience training includes specific commands for behaviors that we want Hiccup to perform. Hiccup is fluent in the following behaviors:
- Sit
- Down
- Sit stays
- Down stays
- Place
- Come
- Heel
- Wait
- Kennel
- Off (Get off furniture when asked)
- Load (Jump into car)
- Break (Release word)
- No (Stop a problem behavior)
As Hiccup is still a young puppy, we do still reinforce these behaviors with food rewards to continue to build value for them. Food rewards does not mean that we “bribe” her for behaviors, rather we can give her a treat for already having done a behavior we ask for.
Go Home Process
With most places that offer fully trained golden retriever puppies, your puppy is trained by the breeder, not by a professional trainer. We believe in utilizing everybody’s strengths, which is why we leave the breeding to really quality breeders, and we manage the training aspect as award winning dog trainers. Every puppy who graduates us gets delivered with in person lessons at no extra charge. We are not a company who will nickel and dime you for every little thing, and we believe that in person delivery and lessons is important to see you up for success.
